Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from jjfcpa who is a senior golfer looking to conquer lengthy par-4s and par-5s. Typically coming up “10-30 yards short on those long par 4s,” jjfcpa reached out to fellow members who have been offering their advice and suggestions.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • CayMan7: “No matter how old you are, everyone can use an extra 20 yards off the tee. I’m 66 and found that by far, the best thing I can do is be sure I have a good amount of lag in my swing. It is much more powerful to throw the club at the ball than push it; like casting a fishing line. I see guys my age with little to no lag, and they hit the ball 200 yards at best, while I’m out there at 240. It is the best thing you can do to gain distance.”
  • Popeye64: “First off I’ll say right off the bat you are not playing with enough loft on your driver. If you are only getting 200 yards out of your driver, you are not generating enough clubhead speed to have a 10.5 be effective. If you have not been fit for a driver do your self a favor. If somehow that is your optimum loft then you are playing the hole with the wrong mindset. I think you will have better success playing the long par 4s as a Par 5. Play your second shot to a distance where you can play a full shot into the green. 30 or 40 yards short can be no man’s land. 60-70 yards with a sand wedge??? I don’t know your game, but I would assume if you can swallow some pride and play the hole strategically, you will score a lot better.”
  • mcs4: “You’re welcome to play whichever tees you like, but IMO if you want to stick with the longer tees your better approach is to really dial in your positional game by playing the long par 4’s as three-shot holes and dialing in a wedge distance or two to rely upon for that third shot. It sounds as though adding 10+ yards to both your driver and 3w would still have you counting on a lot of maxed out 3w shots into the green to reach 400+ yard par 4s in two, which is probably not going to be a recipe for great scoring.”
