Today from the Forums we take a look at a thread amongst WRXers reminiscing about where they were when Jack Nicklaus won his 18th and final major at Augusta National. Our members share their great stories about what they were doing and the stage of their life they were at – with some so inspired by what happened that it was the beginning of their golf journey.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Yuck: “I was with my girlfriend watching on our 25” console tv. I was an avid golfer; she had never played. After the Masters, she went out and bought a set of Judy Rankin clubs including bag and putter. She started playing we continued to date, we got married, had kids. 34 years later, kids are grown, and we still golf. She shot even on the front nine on Sunday and still beats me now and then. I might owe my marriage to Jack’s victory….”
- Neurotica: “I was in college. Was having a few beers at home and found CBS whilst channel surfing when Jack was playing the 10th that day. Watched till the end. Started playing golf after that.”
- jsnoland: “I was 13 at the time, and already a huge golf nut. We would caddy every weekend for extra money at the local club, and play every Monday and then in the occasional junior tournament. One thing I remember from the 86 Masters was the putter Jack used – the MacGregor Response. At the time, the thing was considered MASSIVE in size compared to most other putters in play (Bullseyes, 8802s, Ping Ansers, etc.). Anyway, about a week after he won, we were caddying, and I remember that one of the members had just gotten one, and we were all clamoring to see the thing. Thought it was the coolest thing ever, at least at the time. Funny to look back on this now, but I guess my love for golf gear kinda got started right about then. Between that putter and the “Original One” TaylorMade metalwood (which I also got around that time), it was clearly the beginning of my life as an unrepentant club ho…”
- mizuno player: “I was in Florida. I drove through the night from MD to Ft. Lauderdale for vacation. I was out by the pool partaking in many adult beverages. I came in and saw Jack birdie 9. Sat there a few and he birdied 10. I sat there for the next three hours!!! It was the most thrilling golf I had ever watched. I still get chills watching.”
- JohnnyCashGolf: “Sophomore year at the University of Kentucky. Spent the weekend watching it from my apartment at Greg Page. Shared the apartment with 3 other guys. One was really into golf, and we couldn’t believe what was happening. Brings back good memories. Bought my first and only set of decent brand new irons that year, Wilson Staff Fluid Feels (3i to PW), for $200…when that was really, really, really, a lot of money. As a point of reference, tuition back then was $512 per semester, and student tickets to the basketball and football games were free! The irons are now in the attic, and I haven’t bought a new set of irons for myself since then.”
- dalehead: “Recovering from a pulled tooth that was so bad my dentist opened his office on a Sunday for me. Spent the afternoon in the recliner watching while the pain killers were still circulating through my system. One of the best days of my life.”
