- Lark: “Under the parameters of historically significant to golf, and only since 1990: By far, the 1997 Masters is first, for obvious reasons. I would say the 2002 US Open is up there, as the first-ever on a muni course, putting Bethpage in the spotlight, opening up other muni and public courses for future majors. It was groundbreaking in that sense. Also up there- the 2000 US Open and British Open for the record-breaking margins of victory, levels not seen since Tom Morris. The 2001 Masters for the Tiger Slam. You could also include the 2004 US Open as significant for what seems like the beginning of the USGA botching course set-ups. Also last year’s British Open due to the significance of the location.”
