Hot topics, takes in Tour Talk forum
There’s never a shortage of opinions at GolfWRX.
Tom Watson’s “No Thank-You” to the PGA of America, the SMU ban’s effect on Bryson DeChambeau’s bid to defend his NCAA title.
If you’re unaware of the golf legend’s not-so-kind response to the PGA, here’s what he said regarding the HOF induction: “While I was very flattered by PGA president [Derek] Sprague’s honoring me to be inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame, I couldn’t accept in good conscience because of how the PGA mishandled the firing of my friend and immediate past president of the PGA, Ted Bishop.”
Not surprisingly, there are opinions aplenty on TW’s decision in the thread.
The DeChambeau situation is this: The NCAA champ and U.S. Amateur Champion decided to return to SMU for another year, likely with hopes of capturing another NCAA individual title. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen.
The Dallas Morning News’ Bill Nichols explains:
“The Mustangs will be ineligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions involving recruiting violations under former coach Josh Gregory.
“Gregory helped rebuild his alma mater, leading the Mustangs to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time two seasons ago. But the NCAA investigation revealed 64 impermissible contacts with 10 recruits and seven parents over a 10-month period. The NCAA also said he offered discounted university merchandise and golf equipment in 2013, and that Gregory was aware of a booster who contacted nine recruits. The discount was determined to be $777.”

A serious discussion of a Mike Malaska instruction video with a special guest
User CrisPy3 kicked off the thread by posting video of top instructor Mike Malaska suggesting that a golfer needs to keep the club in front of him/her throughout the swing to stay “on,” not letting it flatten out or trail the body.
CrisPy3 says:
“Mike explains that one needs to actually try to stand the shaft UP to start the downswing. In fact, if you watch most of his videos, it’s about one of the only things he teaches so he must feel pretty strongly about this. And for those willing to discount it too quickly — I believe he worked with Jack at one time and currently works with a few LPGA players… Anyway this is the OPPOSITE of laying the club down and shallowing out (something everyone is fascinated with at the moment). Is this another “illusion” the golf swing plays on us?”
WRXers go back and forth discussing the merits of what Malaska is teaching, before his daughter Ashley Moss, who is also an instructor, joins the conversation.
It’s an awesome thread (and one that could really help your golf game) and just the kind of discussion that makes GolfWRX great.
Reminder: The forums are full of exclusive tournament photos you won’t find anywhere else
