An interesting PXG-related discussion

We’ve talked a lot about the disruptive company/technology of Parsons Xtreme Golf on GolfWRX. Not enough for forum user “tap in birdie,” however, who tested and was fit for a set of PXG irons. Tap in basically calls the PXG irons the greatest he’s ever played, usurping his Miuras. “The technology and performance in these things warrants more attention [than] golfers, including myself, are giving them,” he said, before asking why more WRXers aren’t talking about the clubs.

Price and availability (and likely a healthy dose of skepticism) are offered as explanations for the irons’ “sleeper” status. (If we even agree they’re sleepers). The thread is notable for the back-and-forth about a new technology and its merits, as well as the role of price in golf equipment purchases.

The importance of forgiveness in golf equipment

User Sean2 asked an important question about the nature of golf equipment. Piggybacking off the item above, this thread is a discussion about the real benefits of more forgiving golf equipment.

Sean2 indicates he’s filled his plate with the full buffet of golf equipment and hasn’t found any real advantage in one type of equipment versus another (forged vs. cast irons, for example), but allows that he did hook super game improvement-style irons more (not surprisingly).

Still he asks some thought-provoking questions:

“However, the OEM’s have done a fairly decent job of selling us on the idea of forgiveness. I’m not saying a butter knife is the same as a GI, however if a golfer believes that he can buy a better game I think he is in for some disappointment.

“Yes a misshit with one type of club may result in a better outcome, but not THAT much better.

“AND, if ‘forgiveness’ was all that it was cracked up to be, why haven’t HI’s dropped precipitously? Or, at least to a much larger degree than they were 25 years ago?”

Rory’s new driver shaft

Greg Moore, our staff photographer turns out brilliant shots from the driving ranges and tour trailers of the PGA Tour. We’re still the only major golf site with a real week-in week-out Tour WITB focus. Every week, among the hundreds of photos we feature from the Tour there are some real gems.

Andrew Tursky rounds up a few, and if you want just a taste, his feature is great. But remember, it’s just this tip of the iceberg!

This week, Greg captured Rory McIlroy testing a new driver shaft at the Frys.com Open, in addition to numerous other exclusive shots.

Don’t forget to check out the Tour forum every week for our tournament photos.

Scratch Golf goodbyes

We shared the sad news last week that custom iron masters, Scratch Golf are going out of business.

See that article here.

User Pure745 started a thread after reading the article saying, “I wanted to thank Ari, Patrick, Jeff, and Don for making some of the coolest sets of irons and wedges that I have have the privilege of hitting.”

The thread has turned into something a tribute to the Detroit-area company with WRXers joining in the chorus of anecdotes and well-wishes.
