In our forums, our members have been discussing how often they change their wedges. WRXer ‘JermWRX’ plays 40-50 times a year and is playing the same wedges in his third season. He simply asks “Is it time?”, and our members have been sharing their thoughts.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Abh159: “I’ll change them once the grooves wear down, but that’s about it. Unless you’re a low handicapper or the grooves have actually started to smooth over you shouldn’t notice too much of a difference with brand new grooves. Wedge technology isn’t exactly cutting edge so upgrading every year just for the sake of upgrading is sort of pointless to me.”
- cgasucks: “To me, wedges are like toothbrushes. They come in all shapes and sizes and price points, but they all do the same thing, and they are just a piece of plastic with bristles. A toothbrush is only as good as the person using it. Once the bristles on the toothbrush wear out, it’s time to change them, just like the grooves on the wedge. Fortunately, some grooves on wedges are more durable than others, so one doesn’t change them that often (if they ever will), especially if the wedges are cast.”
- forrester_fire: “Every other year, for me. I had been playing a 5+ year old 56, which I used for almost all greenside shots, that I loved. Middle of last season I got a new one, and it was a night and day difference, as far as spin was concerned. I thought I just wasn’t any good at spinning up the ball on chips…fresh grooves changed my mind on that.”
- randshoe: “Depends on use/ grooves for me. If there’s visible wear mark and grooves are cooked. I’ll move on.”
