What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
  • driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300.  The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length.  I am playing a Ventus Red 70.   I play 70 grams in my fairways.  I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee.  When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time.  So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck.  The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
  • JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

In our forums, our members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
  • RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
  • YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
  • golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”

What club purchase has more impact on overall game: Driver or putter? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether a driver or putter purchase has more impact on the game of a player who regularly shoots in the 70s.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • hammergolf: “It’s always baffled me that guys will spend $500 at the drop of a hat to hit it 8 yds further, but will balk at spending that same $500 on a putter that could improve their score much more.”
  • WipeyFade: “I think with both it’s more about forgiveness than anything. I guess it would depend on which you mishit the most. In my opinion the only difference between a 10 year old driver and a new driver is going to be the forgiveness level. Same with putters.”
  • rooski: “The technology of a newer driver will do much more in forgiveness than any putter technology that has come out since they were shafted with wood (other than maybe L.A.B, that’s some real stuff). That being said, if you currently don’t like your putter, I would upgrade it first given that you seem to enjoy your current driver. If your current driver/putter are roughly equal, I’d go driver first.”
  • sheepdawg: “I’m a whole lot more finicky with drivers. I can putt pretty decent with most anything. Driver has to suit me just so.”

  • Ger21: “Srixon ZX5 LS MK II. Remarkably forgiving.”
  • scooterhd2: “If we are talking about average on course distance, and not max distance, or good hits on a sim, then its G400MAX. Theres no rollout in the woods or the lake. Hit em straight.”

In our forums, our members have been having an interesting discussion on bag setups. WRXer ‘Ghostdunc27’ has been unable to replace the 3-wood he loved and is currently “toying around with the idea of a mini driver or even a higher lofted regular driver with a shorter shaft” to his bag, and reaches out to fellow members on their thoughts.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • tjwilliams31: “I am tinkering with this now. I currently play an SLDR S 14 degree driver at 42.75 as my secondary tee club and it works great. My issue with a lower lofted driver at that length was the tendency for the ball to drop out of the air with a lack of spin. Again this could just be an issue in my delivery at the ball. Everyone in the forum references the Marty Jertson WITB on Youtube with PING and he plays a secondary driver around that length in lieu of 3 wood.”
  • adamwon84: “I switch between a mini driver and a normal 3 wood (15 degrees, crank down to 14) depending on the course. The mini driver is the newest Taylormade mini driver, set at 13.5 degrees and the 3 wood is the Callaway Smoke AI 15 degree set to 14. Both are great, but I am finding that the mini driver is more and more impressive as I use it (especially off the tee box). I did have a mini 300 model that had a 42.5 inch shaft that was fun on the deck and off the tee, really really solid. My current one is with the stock length shaft, but I am looking at ordering a shorter shaft to experiment with.”
  • agree1977: “Have a TSR2 driver and the 13.5 TM BRNR, I use both about the same amount of times a round, it just changes throughout the year, depending on weather, form, course i’m playing, etc. I just found that my 3-wood and 5-wood were pretty much overlaying in a few areas, so set the 5 wood to 18 degrees and it does all i need for a fairway.”

Game enjoyment irons for a blade player? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing game enjoyment’ irons. WRXer ‘BCULAW’ kicks off the thread, saying:

“I love hitting irons. I have played blades for most of the past 15 years. Currently in Pro 221s that I like very much. I have been shooting in the low seventies with them, and am not necessarily looking for gear to improve my iron play.

BUT…….

Sometimes I wish I just had an easy to hit, point and shoot, effortless distance set of irons to tinker around with for fun. A true “game enjoyment” set with great feel and “easy button” playability.

I was about to pull the trigger on a set of G430s for just such occasions. What are the other sets I should consider? Maybe P790?

Whats the best “easy to hit” game enjoyment iron for someone that loves hitting irons?”

And our members have been sharing their top picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • golfschnell: “These guys (featured image), stupid easy to hit, good and consistent spin numbers, nice feel, and since they won’t be your primary players, they are comparatively inexpensive. Super inexpensive if you can assemble yourself.”
  • lefthack: “I bought some Takomo 101’s for this and sold them a month later because it wasn’t as fun. They were stupid easy to hit and it seemed like every shot was straight as an arrow. But I couldn’t tell where on the face I was hitting and didn’t know if it was actually a good shot, or if the irons were doing their thing. But that is me. I like the challenge that is golf and blades make me put effort into my game.”
  • GDB67: “Wilson DnyaPower forged. Absolutely a blast to hit.”

“Let’s just say you were forced at gun point to choose 1 set of irons to last you until the end of time. This set needed to take into account you current game but also your game as you “age”. This sets needs to cover you on any style course you will ever play and you can NEVER change.

Me? I’m going Ping Gxxx. Maybe not the current 400/410/425/430 springy faced stuff but for sure G5-G30 era. Mini tanks that you could drag behind your car, then go play on any club and at any level.

Curious what others feel could be a 1 and done iron? Like that would EVER happen at WRX but I got time to kill….”

In our forums, our members have been discussing the best fairway finders currently on the market. WRXer ‘spartyjeff’ has some upcming tournaments to play, and kicks off the thread saying:

“I have a few local tournaments coming up and I admittedly have always struggled with fairway woods. I need to build a club for an easy to hit, confidence inspiring fairway finder. I have gone the 42” Ping Max driver before and that actually went well then go straight into 2i. Nerves will be high but ideally an easy to hit fairway wood with deep face that I can cut down to play shorter would be better.

Looking for suggestions because I haven’t even hit fairway woods in a while because I’ve never really needed them. Don’t even mention hybrids because that is hook city. I am open to old school clubs too. I even have a cobra SZ hypersteel on the way,”

  • wam78: “Stealth HL, especially if you can find a tour issue head that sits open to square.  A little larger head and super easy to hit off the tee.  And really hot off the face.”

  • Ca3l: “Might as well see how you like the 7 wood before you decide. If you feel like you don’t get enough launch or can’t hold greens with the hybrid then the 9 wood is probably in your future.”
  • Nickb333: “I used a 9w for a short time. Super easy to hit but always felt like a one trick pony to me. 5h is more versatile for me.”
  • tbowles411: “I play both now.  It’s just easier to get the ball in the air. I found the 9w to be a bit easier to use around the greens because of the loft getting the ball in the air and rolling.  Takes some practice, but it’s cool to use.”

Best low spin driver that avoids hooky mishits? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing drivers. WRXer ‘jjinsa’ lays out exactly what he’s looking for in a driver:

“1. On toe hits, must not give me a low spin shot that duck hooks left.  If it stays straight off the toe, even a slight draw of under 5y (I hit a fade) and still stays in the air with decent spin, I am happy. Just dont want those low duck hooks that go OB and cost me 2-3 shots.

2. I realize most low spin drivers will not give me the above, but dont want a driver that is too spinny.”

The Cleveland RTZ seems popular but seen Mizuno also released new forged wedges which is interesting. In our forums, our members have been discussing 7-woods and 9-woods. In a thread started back in 2023, and now revived and receiving plenty of traction, WRXer ‘LowandLeft32’ asks users for the ‘standout’ and game-changing’ 7-woods and 9-woods on the market, and our members have been sharing their top picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BlackFlamingo: “G430 max 7-wood for me as well. So easy to get in the air.”
  • dcdavis25: “Paradym 7-wood has been amazing for me!  Lunches high and enough spin to hold greens from 210+ and is very forgiving.”
  • tbsbama: “Taylormade M6. The 5-wood was so good I had to have the 7-wood. Effortless, straight shot for 205/210. I have owned a hundred hybrids that i never could hit, but this has changed that shot.”
  • toddba11: “Ping G430 Max, 7-wood (21 degrees), installed a Tensei pro white 1K shaft (Stiff 70 gram) that I cut down from a driver.  Love this combo, has become a go to for me.”

Is it wrong to carry 54 and 56-degree wedges? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing wedge setup strategy. WRXer ‘Thrummyfox’ is wondering whether he should game both a 54 and 56-degree wedge, and kicks off the thread saying:

“My favourite club for 75-90 yards is my Glide 4 54-degree wedge. But I’m not keen from green side bunkers. I usually carry a 59-degree Ping Glide Pro Eye2 but have been struggling a bit of late with it from bunkers and around the green. My initial plan is to 52, 56 and 59 but seriously contemplating 54,56 and maybe nothing higher lofted.

My set PW is an S56 at 47-degrees. Thoughts WRXers?”

And our memebrs have been sharing their thoughts on the matter in our forum.

  • rsballer10: “I would do whatever works for you, but if you can’t hit a lob wedge I would just not use one. Play with 13 clubs, or maybe add another club to the top of the bag perhaps? Lob wedges are tricky, because for some people they are very difficult to hit. I’ve learned to use LW more around the greens over the years, and have gotten used to the ball coming out high and soft. It’s easier to accelerate through the ball, knowing the ball isn’t going to jump on me.”
  • kcsf: “There is no wrong in golf, only do or do not.”
  • Bye: “If you are clear what their jobs are, then it really doesn’t matter what the lofts are. Having a club for bunker shots and another for very short approaches, pitching and chipping is quite sensible IMO.”

How many clubs can you eliminate before you ‘lose something?’– GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing the merits of playing with less than 14 clubs. WRXer ‘Royal Mustang’ kicks off the thread, saying:

“I had this debate with a group over on Reddit (got downvoted to hell). I argued that you don’t need 14 clubs and that it may be to your advantage to play with 8 or 10. Sure, it’s nice to have, but a better player can go out with 10 clubs and probalby shoot the same score or maybe lose a stroke. Even 8 clubs is fine: a good player doesn’t need a 7 because they can work their 6 to the same distance. This excludes obvious situations like a 235 yard Par 3 where you need a strong 4-iron or 3H/7W and you don’t have that in you bag. The pro at the course I grew up at (who was a helluva player but never played-he was a touring pro at one point) broke par at our course with 5 clubs once. That’s all he ever played with (and putted with driver); he walked with one of those 70’s era Sunday bags that held 6 clubs max.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.”

And our members have been weighing into the debate in our forum.

  • Ca3l: “I’ve played a decent amount of golf with 6-7 clubs. I think 8 is a good number. I can’t agree that most people would play better with less clubs, but I think most could stay within a few strokes going down to 7, and course dependent prob end up within a couple by having 8. There’s a whole long and popular thread about this, minimalist bag I think it’s called.”
  • kwcsports: “Obviously if you’re a scratch or very good player, having a full set will be needed to hit all the yardages. Me being an 8-10 cap, I can seriously use a driver, 5 wood, 3,5,7,9,pw and sw and shoot the same scores as carrying a full set. I’ve played with 8-9 clubs in a Sunday bag and shoot exact range of scores I always shoot.”
  • notgreatnotterrible: “I can get behind this because I am 100% convinced that certain clubs can actually add to your score.  I played with a 60* for a couple years, and that dang thing added probably 2 shots/round to my score.  Same with a 3i—I’d pure it every once in awhile and it made me think I was better with it than I actually was.”

In our forums, our members have been discussing the products they bought in 2025 that have given them the most joy. WRXer ‘Rory4Pres’ kicks off the thread, saying:

“I switched from a Ventus red Velocore 6S to a 5S and have really enjoyed it.  It’s provided me a higher ball flight so I can now play a variety of knockdown shots again that I haven’t been able to play the past few years.  It’s also been easier to turn over into a nice baby draw with plenty of roll out.

What new golf purchase have you bought this year that has brought you some enjoyment and why?”

And our members have been sharing their top products of 2025 in our forum.

  • phizzy30: “Got a Diamana BB that I’ve been swapping back and forth with my trusty AD VF.  Sure it’s gotta wider dispersion pattern because of how different the feel is, but I ain’t gonna complain about getting an extra 2-5 mph more ball speed.  That is until I start spraying them OB all over the course, lol.”
  • eddiebigeddie: “I have 2 so far…the Mizuno 925 Forged Black with MMT 105’s I’ve been throwing darts so far. The other club equally important is the DS Adapt Max-K. In the fairway a lot more and makes the game easier from there.
  • AdExec: “I went from T100S irons and SM9 and wedges to ZXI7 and Mizuno T1 wedges and the improved feel has been one of the most substantial differences Ive ever felt in golf clubs between sets.”

3-woods that go high without hooking? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing 3-woods that go high without hooking. WRXer ‘BurghLefty’ kicks off the thread, saying:

“I’m trying to find an off-the turf 3-wood with fade bias, but then it seems those that have one have deep faces that are hard to hit off the turf and a forward weight that launches it low (basically, a great 3 wood for the tee in my hands).

Does anyone know of a 3-wood with a shallow face that can launch the ball high off the turf to hold a green without having a draw bias?”

And our members have been sharing their suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • brutusflash: “I found a 2023 Wilson Dynapower on the bat for a Lillie over $100 and it’s been outstanding- best 3-wood I’ve hit in sometime and does not want to go left on its own- and easy to launch. I took out the back weight and added lead tape up front to knock down some spin and it’s perfect.”
  • MountainMan: “You could look at the new Cobra fairways. A lot of adjustability in those to take the draw out.”
  • phizzy30: “I have a Qi10 tour that doesn’t go hard left on me, ever.  You can always slide the weight over to the high spin setting though which is nice.  It’s definitely not hard to hit off the deck either.  The regular Qi10 is a good one as well that’s shallower, easy to hit of the deck and isn’t a hook machine.”
